History

Abilene was established as a stock shipping point by cattlemen on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881. In 1940, Abilene raised money to purchase land for an Army base called Camp Barkeley on the southwest of town. At the time, Camp Barkeley was twice the size of Abilene housing 60,000 men. Citizens were worried that the town would become a ghost town after the base closed. However, due to the post-World War II boom, many of the servicemen ended up returning to start businesses in Abilene. The city has become one of the fastest-growing areas in Texas since then.
